During the first week of January the seventeen-piece Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra recorded their new album at the Sonic Arts Center engineered by SAC faculty member Paul Special. Scott Reeves is a faculty member of the City College music department and is the Director of Jazz Studies. All compositions for the recording session were either arranged or composed and arranged by Scott. Steve Wilson, another music department faculty member, was the lead alto sax for the recording and was a featured soloist on two of the songs. SAC students, Dawid Arciszewski, Michael Paliocha, and Johnathan Wright were the General Assistants for the recording session. Below Scott Reeves and Paul Special listen to some playbacks from the recording session.
Dan Levine, trombone (Bruce Springsteen, Fatboy Slim, David Byrne), Craig Johnson, trumpet, (Blood, Sweat, & Tears, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin) and John Scarpulla tenor sax (Billy Joel, John Mayer, Tower of Power, Ruben Blades) were recently at the Sonic Arts Center for a reading of student horn arrangements for our Instrumentation and Arranging for Commercial Music class. The student arrangers had the rare opportunity to hear their music played by first call players and receive invaluable feedback from them as well. The guys were impressed with the level of arranging. Dan remarked “You’ve created a real professional environment for these students, which is a rarity in colleges.” Thanks Dan, Craig, and John.
